There’s a reason why there is “cat” in caterwaul. This sound is done in mating. It is a long drawn-out, hollow-sounding cry that signals the availability of a female in heat. She will use this sound to attract the neighborhood males, who in turn, will use their own form of caterwauling to win over the female.
These are the basic communication sounds a cat will make, but is by no means the end of the list. Some cats have their own set of vocals with meanings that may only be known to their pet-parents. Listen to your cat to learn what he or she may be trying to tell you. Having the skill-set to translate cat-talk to human response is an excellent way to bond with your fur-baby and to keep everything purring along.
